Ice Carving Champions

by Valerie McGowen

The Henry Ford Ice Carving Club participated in two separate competitions the weekend of January 23-25th. The Plymouth Ice show was a tremendous success, with hundreds of children standing in awe of our Kung Fu Panda sculptures. Only three members of our team participated in the competition, with four other members there to support and lend a hand. Every member placed within the top ten, and two of those in the top five! Marcus Richardson took 9th place with his Bugs Bunny sculpture, Robert Wiley took 5th place with his Chinese dragon, and Harry Werwinski took 3rd place and a bronze medal with his giraffe.

The other half of our team took part in the Frankenmuth Competition and took first place! Both Jeremy Carey and Jeff Prather were in first place standing until their team competition sculpture fell over and broke not once, but twice. After rebuilding their giant freestyle alien it crashed a second time; now that's dedication. Special thanks go out to Sharon and Joe Horvath for accompanying our team to Frankenmuth while our club advisor was occupied at Plymouth. Congratulations to all members of the Ice Carving Club on two very successful competitions. And to all of the other students, teachers and family members who showed up to support our club, Thank You for braving the cold and showing that you care. We hope to see you at the next event!
